Vietnamese actors besiege French stage - Vietnamese tuong
A combination of Vietnamese tuong (classic drama) and European masked theatre has been running for one week at France’s famed Festival d’Avignon.
After its great success in Ha noi Hue and Hcm city Antigone Viet nam is being staged at the festival that will run until July 26. A joint production between the French Monte-Charge Theatre and the Viet Nam National Theatre of Tuong, the performance has won the hearts of even the most discerning French audiences.
"We’ll put on 24 performances of Antigone Viet Nam throughout the festival. So far, the public has been touched by every one, with strong applause from the audience. A tour of France is being prepared for the show in response to the reaction by theatre directors in attendance," said Alain Destandau, director of the Monte Charge theatre and the play’s director.
"The troupe is very motivated, very united and it’s a true pleasure to be together, in France like it was in Viet Nam," he added.
The show has received good reviews from the French local press.
The scenario, written and staged by Destandau, is about Tiane, a nice simple girl born into a royal family. Whatever happiness she enjoys as a child is stripped from her once the war breaks out. Her father and brothers all die, leading to her uncle appropriating the throne.
Since women were not allowed to bury men at the time, she accepts to sacrifice herself to bury her brothers. Just as she faces death, doves that she had previously liberated from their cage come back to save her.
The scenario in Antigone Viet Nam is inspired by the play Antigone: An Occidental Theatrical Repertoire by Sophocles. Antigone is a character who’s both fragile and strong. She has an unshakeable sense of honour and responsibility which pushes her to sacrifice her life to defend her values.
"The play is dedicated to the courage and the engagement of Vietnamese women," Destandau said.
French and Vietnamese actors speak to each other in their native languages, although it’s staged so that spectators from either group can follow the play.
"They can understand by seeing our gestures and facial expressions the emotions the artists want to convey," he said. "There’s no language barrier in the show."
Festival d’Avignon, or Avignon Festival, is an annual arts festival held in the French city of Avignon. Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, it is an oldest festival in France and one of the world’s most revered.
Lectures, performances, expositions, discussions and meetings have made this south eastern city a forum not only for productions, but also where the lively engagement of artists meets the passion of the public
