Young Vietnamese living in France give Hue their heart

“Wherever we are, Vietnam is always part of our heart”, the Union of Vietnamese Youth in France (UJVF) President Nguyen Minh Man said during the group’s visit to Vietnam for the Hue Festival.
Man said this was the message his delegation brought to the homeland. They had come to Hue Festival for the first time to perform a dance combining traditional Vietnamese Thai ethnic dance with modern breakdancing.

Meeting with the delegation on June 12, Vice Chairman of the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, Nguyen Quoc Dung, said he hoped the UJVF would initiate more programmes to promote images of Vietnamese land and people in France.

Dung praised the UJVF’s operations and briefed the group on Vietnam’s policies and work for overseas Vietnamese, particularly young people.

The union was set up in 1976. Its precursor was the Association of Vietnamese Students in France an active part in the protest against the US’s war in Vietnam

The UJVF now has some 200 members who are second generation Vietnamese living in France.

In recent years, the UJVF has conducted a range of activities to promote Vietnamese culture in France, including holding Vietnamese language courses, supporting Vietnamese students in France, and cooperating with youth organisations in Vietnam.

The union has encouraged its members to take part in teaching French to students in several schools in Hanoi and Ho chi minh city It has also presented gifts to poor children in Danang City and Agent Orange victims in southern Phu Yen Province, and joined the local youth’s voluntary program “Green Summer” in southern Ben Tre and Tra Vinh provinces.
