American jazz singer Kimo William and his Big Band Kimotion gave a performance at the Ho chi minh city Conservatory of Music on Monday.
On stage, there were also Vietnamese artists, including saxophonist Tran Manh Tuan, đan bau(monochord) player Do Toan Thang, t'rung (bamboo xylophone) player Dinh Tuyet Le, and a string quartet of conservatory students.
They presented jazz works such as “Madsoap,” “Kimotion,” “Bleath,” Paumalu, “A story from Hue ” “Buffalo,” and “The meeting.”
After the unique show, the singer and the band will arrive for another performance on Wednesday in Hue on the occasion of Hue Festival.
Kimo Williams graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1976 with a BA in composition. He released his first album “War Stories” on his own label Little Beck Music. The album featured original compositions performed by his 30-member Kimotion ensemble. In 1999, the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra recognized Kimo for his contribution to American Music and selected him Composer of Year.
Kimotion, a symphonic-jazz-rock big-band formerly known as The Paumalu Symphony, was formed in 1975. At that time, Kimo Williams was a student at Berklee College of Music in Boston. The band includes 20 members, four trumpeters, four trombonists, fives saxophonist, as well as players for guitar, keyboards, percussion, drums, and a string section. Kimo himself plays bass.
